This week has been filled with reminders of life lessons.  Things happened and I wasn’t very happy with how I reacted.  I forgot to rely on these life lessons that I know so well.  Does this happen to you?  I know how I want to behave in certain situations yet I find myself falling back into old patterns that no longer serve me.  Here are 5 great reminders that helped me this week. (I have my coach to thank for bringing them out of me!)  I hope they help you, too.

Life Lesson #1 — Let go of the “how”

Have you ever become firmly attached to the outcome of something you want to happen?  Sometimes I get attached to the outcome of one of my visions.  I see it so clearly that it is hard to imagine happening any other way.  The “how” my vision will come to life is very clear to me, but when other people are involved in my vision … when timing is involved  … when life happens, my vision can get very blurry.  And disappointment can set in.

Here’s what I want to remember each and every time:  There is more than one way that my vision can come to life … what if it didn’t happen exactly as I saw it?  What if the way it finally turned out was even better than I imagined? 

When I let go of the “how,” the possibilities become endless.  Let go of the “how.”


Life Lesson #2 — Go with the flow

Have you ever tried to force solutions to a particular problem or challenge?  I have — and I know that the best solutions rarely come from this approach.  Forced solutions don’t feel quite right, they feel contrived and often don’t work in the long run.

What if you allowed yourself to brainstorm creative solutions, share them with others to get input and feedback and see what naturally develops from there?  Sit with an idea for a while, mull it over, talk it out, let your subconscious mind work with it — ideas need time to mature and grow.  Water them like a seed.

When I listen to my inner wisdom and wait till it feels right, the idea will come to life.  Relax and go with the flow.


Life Lesson #3 — It will happen if it’s meant to be

By now you’re probably recognizing the thread here … let go of how it will happen … go with the flow so it can happen in the best possible way … and know that if it’s meant to be it will happen for you.

This life lesson has served me very well over the years.  Although, sometimes it’s not the first thing I think about when something happens.  First disappointment, sadness or displeasure set in … then I think about it for a bit … then I let out a tremendously big sigh.  When I finally remember this life lesson, it is always a huge relief to me.  I can relax now.  If it’s not meant to be then I’m okay with that.  I’m ready to move on.

The trick is to remember this before I let the disappointment, sadness or displeasure take a foothold in my body and mind.   If it’s meant to be, it will happen.


Life Lesson #4 — All in good time

Are you impatient?  Do you want things now?  I do.  I think it’s the human condition and our conditioning in this world of instant gratification.  Learning to be patient is hard — especially with ourselves.

When I have a good idea for my business or I want to go somewhere in particular or I think things should change in a certain way — I want to make those things happen quickly.  I can trace back much of this behavior to my long corporate career where I presented ideas, set expectations and it was assumed that I would make those ideas a reality in short order.

Most of life outside the corporate world doesn’t work that way.  As I said before, things take time to develop.  Remembering that we are not always in control is a good thing to remember.  If it’s meant to be, it will happen … all in its own good time.


Life Lesson #5 — I am blessed; I am grateful

What are you blessed with in your life?  What are you grateful for?  Think about all the things in your life that are good.  Start with the smallest things and build from there. Write them down in a journal or on a pad of paper.  Reflect on them and smile.

When I have forgotten that I am blessed and I am grateful, life started to go badly for me.  I didn’t feel very connected to anything or anyone.  There was a time in my life when I didn’t see a lot to be grateful for.  I didn’t stop to recognize what was always good — my family and my friends have always been there for me.  I started with that. 

Now I keep a gratitude journal which I write in nearly every day … my practice is to write three things for which I’m grateful.  I start it in the morning and add to it as my day goes on, because every single day someone does something nice or something good happens that I can write in my journal.  It’s not hard at all. 

This is one of those life lessons that trumps them all.  Look around you.  You are blessed.  Be grateful.
