A few years ago I was working in Corporate America. One morning I got a call from my manager that rocked my world. My career as I knew it was coming to an end in a month’s time after nearly 20 years with the company. I was wondering how many career transitions I need to make in one lifetime. Wow … a big kick in the gut!
After a few days of wallowing in self-pity, wondering what the hell I was going to do now — struggling with decisions about medical insurance, a job search in a very different world, whether to retire or not and, and, and — a friend and colleague called me to ask how I was doing.
A Different Perspective
As I started to describe the litany of things I was worried about she stopped me. This is when I heard the best advice anyone could have given me … and it was the kick in the butt I needed. She said, “Maria, what if you act as though it was YOUR idea!” It turned things around for me almost immediately. I began to think of this major life change as though it were my choice. It’s just a different perspective.
That advice works for so many life situations — some that are thrust upon you without warning and others that happen gradually. When you choose to think of it as your own idea YOU become responsible for the outcome. YOU start calling the shots. YOU become empowered.
Now, THAT puts a very different spin on things, doesn’t it?
Whether you’re going through a divorce or contemplating one, changing careers, finding yourself in an empty nest, relocating to a new city or on the edge of retirement you can make a choice to be in control of your destiny.
Make It Your Choice
When you take a bit of time, get clear on what you want to happen and take baby steps to get there, the results you create will be the ones you want.
Make no mistake, these major life changes are not easy — there are starts and stops, a lot of soul searching along the way and there is planning and testing things out before you feel a lot of progress.
At some point on this journey your vision will become clear, the steps to get you there will line up in a row and you will have charted your course. You’ll feel empowered to see it through and you will discover a NEW YOU on the other side.
